An Inauguration Spoiler Alert!
I am usually an independent or Green Party voter. This year I registered Democrat so I could vote for Bernie. I strive to maintain an attitude and language of inclusiveness so this post is in no means meant to support one political ideology over another. I believe that all viewpoints have something of value and underneath our external presentation we have more in common than not. What I want for me; peace, economic security, health, freedom to live my life according to my beliefs, I want for all of us. We are all just walking each other home. In geologic time, ideology recedes in importance and we are measured by how we loved.
Breaking The Enchantment
The inauguration of Donald Trump as the 45th president of the United States is causing an uproar and feeding the fires of our highly polarized and fractured country. I am hearing a lot of people spinning powerful stories of how horrible, hopeless, disastrous Trump’s apparent election is or will be for us. And I’m hearing other stories about how he is going to save us from the evils of….well, take your pick!
We are all enchanted by the stories we listen to and the stories we tell ourselves.
It is my belief that my freedom can be determined by how I interpret, or how I tell my story of what’s going on in our world. So as I am battered by fear and joy and hopelessness and hope I decided to look further into the meaning of the word Inauguration and its application to “now” in order to craft my story for what’s ahead.
a: to dedicate ceremoniously: observe formally the beginning of …
b: to bring about the beginning of….
The word inauguration comes from Auger. “In Rome, an augur was considered to be a divine soothsayer who could interpret the will of the gods by observing the flight patterns of birds.”
The Bernie Bird Inaugurates!
Remember that electrifying (to some of us!) moment last March in Portland, OR, when the small bird landed on Bernie’s podium and sat for a moment until it caught Bernie’s eye and acknowledgment? And Bernie’s declaration that it was a bird bringing a message of Peace? It was a riveting and even ecstatic moment for those of us who practice seeing the world symbolically. When I saw that I saw Nature inaugurating Bernie and it gave me hope that he would be our next president.
So What Happened?
My thoughts on the outcome of the election have fluctuated wildly and challenged my dedication to fostering unity in my inner and outer lives. Why didn’t Bernie win after being inaugurated by Nature?
There are lots of reasons why Bernie didn’t win that will probably be debated about for years to come. However I do trust that our collective mind needed Donald Trump and all that he brings with him to learn something about ourselves. I am choosing to use this opportunity to show me the places where I’m still tempted to fall into fear and projection. It is a constant practice. And I’m more engaged than before, making phone calls and writing letters daily, as are so many others.
I also trust that the Bernie Bird inaugurated Bernie’s platform of equality and justice for all, environmental stewardship, public education for all and a narrowing of the ever-widening income gap.
What Does This Mean For Us?
I’m choosing my interpretation of these current events as a liberating story, one that liberates me from the tyranny of mass consensus reality.
The way I see it, Nature inaugurated Bernie’s platform which means that Nature is my ally and Nature trumps Trump’s agenda. I can’t, nor do I want to, attach to what I want to see play out. I just want to have integrity with the process that is unfolding and contribute to what I hold as my ideals of love, unity, diversity, equality for all. I will continue to honor Nature as my guide give my attention to her. In this way, I am inaugurating her.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it for as long as it works for me!
