Welcome 2022

Another calendar year ends, a new one begins. The ending and beginning of any cycle is a ripe opportunity to pause, evaluate the past, and resolve and reset to go forward.

A tarot reading can be a rich source for reflection to guide this process and refer back to as a reference point for moving forward.

I did the following reading for the collective “we” and offer it to you, for your perusal. The intrepid Fool represents us, as we pause to consider how we move forward.

I’m using the Pagan Otherworlds Tarot deck. (Aren’t the images lovely?) I love how the Fool enters into the messages of the reading and emerges as the Magician. At this crucial time of chaos and collapse, we all need to step into our Magician selves and manifest in our hearts and our lives the kind of world we want to live in. The Magician tasks us with imagining what we want to create in the coming year. This reading is just the first step.

I’m sharing my version of his story below. What might your story be? I invite your comments.

What do I leave behind?

Who am I at this threshold?

What is my most beneficial focus moving forward?

The Weary Traveler’s Decision

It was another exhausting year coming to an end. The weary traveler paused at the threshold as he contemplated if and how to move forward. He sat down with a big sigh, absentmindedly patting his companion as if to reassure them both, and looked at what all he was carrying in his pack. It was so very heavy. The past year was full of dashed hopes, broken dreams, thwarted plans and so much loss.

He closed his eyes and waited, casting about for some sign, anything, to help him continue. And then he remembered that even amongst the broken pieces there still burned within him that spark of life, ready to blossom, that made him grateful to be alive. He remembered that there is so much Beauty in the world.

Refreshed now, he emptied his pack and sorted through all the stuff he carried, setting aside those things that were finished and would never be useful again. He carefully repacked it taking only those things that would bring him Joy and support his journey. Blessing them all with gratitude, he rose, shouldered his pack, picked a nearby rose to help him remember and stepped into the new year.

His resolve and his vision filled him with renewed strength as he went forward, his heart full of the promise of Life, no longer innocent, but vibrant with intention to sow Beauty into the world wherever he found himself.

And so it was.
